• Description: Buste d’Aurélien, tête radiée, à droite, avec cuirasse et pan de paludamentum, vu de trois quarts en avant (B01).

• Translation: “Restitutor Orbis”, (Le Restaurateur du Monde).
• Description: Pax (La Paix) (?) drapée, debout à droite, tendant une couronne de la main droite à Aurélien lauré, en habit militaire, debout à gauche, tendant la main droite et tenant une haste de la main gauche.

Description of the condition of the coin: Flan large. Joli buste d’un très beau style. Avec toute son argenture. Concrétions marron. Bel exemplaire pour ce rare atelier.

About this type:Les émissions de Tripolis furent courtes. L’atelier, dont la production avait toujours été faible, ferma ses portes vers la fin de l’année 274. Le besoin local en numéraire devait être suffisamment couvert par la Monnaie d’Antioche, en particulier depuis que l’empereur et son armée quittèrent l’Orient après le sac de Palmyre.

History: Aurélien est né vers 207 à Sirmium. Après une brillante carrière militaire, il fut proclamé auguste à Sirmium après la mort de Claude II et resta seul empereur après le suicide de Quintille. Il prit la douloureuse décision d'abandonner la Dacie en 271 puis attaqua Zénobie et Vaballath en s'emparant de Palmyre en 272. Ensuite, il entreprit la reconquête de l'Empire Gaulois et vainquit Tétricus à Châlons. Il triomphe à Rome et accorde la vie sauve à ses prisonniers de marque. Il est assassiné au moment où il préparait une campagne contre les Sassanides afin de reconquérir la Mésopotamie. Avec la réforme, Aurélien essaya de récréer un véritable système monétaire cohérent qui avait complètement disparu depuis la fin du règne de Gallien. Un retour à l'orthodoxie monétaire, les victoires sur Palmyre et l'Empire Gaulois permirent cette restauration monétaire qui devait subsister tant bien que mal jusqu'à la réforme de Dioclétien en 294. Apparemment le denier, parfois argenté, valait la moitié de la nouvelle monnaie dénommée aurelianus ou antoninianus.
